Lars Klingbeil has been Secretary-General of the SPD since December 2017. As a student of political science, sociology and history, he became involved with the SPD early on in the town council of his hometown of Munster. In 2006, he was elected as a district councillor in the Heidekreis. Since the 2009 Bundestag elections, he has been allowed to represent his homeland as a member of the German Bundestag. He won the direct mandate in the 2017 Bundestag election. In the Defence Committee of the German Bundestag, he still takes care of the soldiers and the modernization of the Bundeswehr sites in his region. His other focus is digitalization. As spokesman for the SPD, Klingbeil was involved in the coalition negotiations for the grand coalition in 2013. From 2014 to 2018, he was the chairman of all Lower Saxony and Bremen MPs in the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag.
