Many would like to see Europe as a value-based and autonomous global actor. However, what that exactly means is up for debate. Complicating matters are different national perspectives on protectionism and diverging attitudes towards China. At the same time, as the Biden administration finds its footing, the transatlantic partnership is getting a second chance. Ultimately, Europe’s global role and identity will be created through its relations with other international actors. How autonomy fits into this puzzle will determine the course for international relations in the coming years. Join this session to hear an international panel of experts defines European open strategic autonomy and what that means for progressives on both sides of the Atlantic.
